How to Nail Your Messaging Before Investing in Marketing Efforts
September 29, 2024
TLDR
Test your messaging on Reddit to ensure it resonates with your target audience before spending time and money on marketing.
When you do it right, you can dial in your landing pages, outreach, ads, and marketing material without spending a dime.
Here's how...
Why Reddit?
Reddit is a goldmine for market research because users are already segmented by interest.
You can tap into these communities to understand your audience better and find out what offer and messaging will work before spending the time and money on marketing.
Finding the Pain Points
Start with a great understanding of your audience's pain points.
People love to vent their frustrations, so make a post asking about the worst part of what they do as it relates to what you offer. Here are some example questions:
“What’s the worst part of marketing a small business?”
“What do you hate the most about getting in shape?”
“Working in finance sucks sometimes, what’s the worst part?”
Testing Your Messaging
Once you've identified the pain points, it’s time to create and test your messaging to find what resonates with your target market.
We need something that will hit hard and provoke an emotional response; something that your target audience will closely relate to.
In our case, we went on a full rant:
Use the Hook, Retain, Reward framework to craft the most compelling and enjoyable content possible:
Hook: The title needs to strike an emotional chord with your target audience. Make it attention-grabbing and relatable.
Retain: The body copy should be incredibly relatable to keep the audience engaged. Share a full rant about the pain points of your target audience.
Reward: Offer something positive and encouraging, giving the reader a sense of reward for engaging with your content.
When you get this post just right, the engagement will be insane. It doesn’t matter if this is your first post ever or if you have no audience on social media to begin with. High engagement is a clear indicator that your messaging resonates.
Use This Messaging Everywhere
When you’ve tested your messaging and found something that “clicks” with your audience, it’s time to turn it into marketing material.
This new messaging should be the focus of your:
Ad creative and copy
Outreach messaging
Social media posts
Landing page copy
Lead magnets
Everything else
Bonus: Find Customers Directly Through Reddit
In addition to testing your messaging here, this strategy can be a great way to find customers.
Since most Reddit communities do not allow promotion of any kind, one great way around this is to Direct Message users who seem qualified in the comments.
In the same example above, I read through every comment and sent DMs to about 20 users to start a conversation around how I could help them overcome these challenges.
